“Take Your Pleasures Seriously.” – Charles Eames
For me, there’s a straight line connecting Charles Eames, venerable furniture sellers Heals and pleasure.
In 2000, my now wife and I decided to get married. Whilst a surprise for our friends and families given that we’d never seemed to feel the need in the preceding 11 years we’d been together, still straightforward enough you’d think. So to spice things up, we thought we’d do it within a month of making the decision.
Finding venues, catering, transport, DJs who would play the Sex Pistols and strictly no Abba, accommodation for guests, all within 4 weeks? Easy. Finding a shop we liked that had a slot for a wedding list for 4 weeks hence? No chance.
After trying loads of places, we thought we’d ask our favourite shop, even though we knew it would be double and triple booked. So, off to Tottenham Court Road and Heals we went.
In a moment of amazing luck, we entered the wedding list office as a rather dejected looking groom-to-be (or not, as it turned out) left. He had just cancelled his list for, you guessed it, the weekend we were getting married. Not that we were keen to celebrate someone else’s misfortune, but … GET IN!
